Plant Associates Inc. was engaged to provide landscape architecture design services for Highland Gardens a new 114 unit mid rise apartment building. Working with the HACM and AG Architecture a number of design considerations were addressed within the scope of this project. We provided an overall landscape site design that provides outdoor seating areas and game tables for social interaction, site accessibility, inclusion of a diverse plant species palette, incorporates sustainable design principles, minimizes maintenance of the site and provides for an environment that is safe and secure for residents in this urban community. Conceptual plan iterations were designed and final plans, specifications and bid documents were developed.
In the courtyard, the design of two rain gardens at the front of the building work in tandem with the green roof for storm water management that catch and absorb excess water from the roof.
Construction administration services were also provided for Highland Gardens including plant layout, submittal reviews and site observation visits with the associated filing of field reports. Selection, review and hard tagging of trees for this project by the landscape architect ensured quality control for size, shape and condition per American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards.
The design team successfully addressed diverse needs of the parties involved, within a tight budget and without compromising the integrity of the design. This involved coordination with many consultants, City of Milwaukee, Friends of Housing, HACM, City Forestry Department and residents of Highland Gardens.
